About Wilderlab

Global leaders in environmental DNA testing

Environmental eDNA laboratory

Wilderlab is a pioneering environmental DNA (eDNA) laboratory based in Wellington, New Zealand, with a global reach and reputation. Founded by Dr Shaun Wilkinson, a molecular ecologist with a mission to massively upscale biodiversity monitoring around the globe, we combine cutting-edge research, award-winning innovation, and practical solutions to empower conservationists, monitoring agencies, researchers, and communities to protect ecosystems with precision and confidence.

Compact eDNA sampling kits

Our user-friendly, compact eDNA sampling kits require no specialised training or equipment, making advanced genetic monitoring accessible to all. These kits utilise a unique on-site processing and preservation system that eliminates the need for cold storage or bulky transport. Lightweight samples can be easily shipped via standard courier or post to our ISO17025-accredited laboratory, where we deliver highly sensitive DNA testing — from targeted single-species detection to comprehensive multispecies sequencing.

Powerful multispecies testing

Our flagship multispecies eDNA testing panel is specifically designed to capture the rich biodiversity of life. Leveraging an extensive, expertly curated reference database and bespoke analytical software, Wilderlab can identify thousands of species – all from just a liter of water. This capability supports critical efforts in invasive species management, conservation of endangered native species, and ecosystem health assessment across diverse environments.

Connecting people and nature through eDNA

We help clients uncover hidden biodiversity and track pest and endangered species alike, offering clear, actionable insights based on robust scientific analysis. Our compact eDNA sampling kits are designed for ease of use in a wide range of settings — from biosecurity checkpoints and conservation projects to educational initiatives and environmental resource management programs.

Meet our founder

From his early life in the rural Manawatū region of New Zealand and a career as a professional chef, Dr Shaun Wilkinson transitioned to science with a BSc (First Class Honours), PhD, and postdoctoral research focused on marine symbiosis and coral reef biology. His work earned the prestigious Rutherford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship to conduct pioneering eDNA surveys in Timor-Leste’s coral reefs, further sharpening his expertise in environmental DNA methodologies. Shaun founded Wilderlab in 2019 in his home garage.
