Frequently Asked Questions

Your eDNA questions, answered

What is environmental DNA (eDNA)?

eDNA is tiny traces of genetic material that organisms leave behind in their environment—like water or soil. By analysing this DNA, we can identify which species are present without having to see or catch them.

How do I collect a sample?

Our sampling kits are designed to be simple and easy to use by anyone—no special skills needed. Each kit comes with clear, step-by-step instructions to help you collect your sample safely and correctly.

How do I send in my sample?

Once you’ve collected your sample, it’s preserved then and there with our unique DNA-stabilisation system—so you don’t need to keep it cold. You can send it to us via standard post or courier using the packaging included in your kit.

How long until I get my results?

From when we receive your sample, results usually take 2 to 3 weeks. We’ll notify you by email once your eDNA report is ready to view online.

How accurate are your tests?

We’re an ISO17025 accredited lab, which means our methods meet the highest international standards. While results depend on factors like sample quality and environmental conditions, you can trust the reliability of our data.

Can anyone use your kits?

Absolutely. Our kits are made for scientists, government agencies, educators, community groups—really anyone interested in monitoring their environment.

Can I order multiple kits?

Yes! Whether you’re working on a large project or want to involve a group, you can order as many kits as you need.

What if something goes wrong with my sample?

To avoid contamination or errors, please follow the instructions carefully. If we detect any issues during processing, we’ll get in touch with advice on next steps.

What species can I detect?

Our tree-of-life metabarcoding detects tens of thousands of species—fish, mammals, reptiles, plants, algae, and bacteria. Check the map for your species or contact our science team to confirm.

Who uses Wilderlab's services?

Our clients include researchers, conservation groups, government agencies, educators, and more—anyone who needs accurate environmental monitoring.

Is my data private?

Yes, your information is kept confidential and secure. Only you can access your results through your personal online portal, unless you have chosen to make your data publicly available at the sample submission step.

How do I get help if I have questions?
